Travelling to South East Asia? Here are the Must-have Vaccines
When it comes to travel vaccinations, there is never a one-size-fits-all solution. The vaccinations you go for are specifically tailored for your destination and the levels of exposure you may have while in those places. If you are planning a trip to south-east Asia, especially the Indochina region comprising of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, here are our top recommendations for the jabs you should consider:
Hepatitis A Vaccine
Hepatitis A is a viral disease caused by contaminated food and water, and is one of the risks travelers are exposed to throughout the Indochina region. There are basically three types of Hepatitis A vaccines:
- The monovalent vaccine – specifically for Hepatitis A
- Combined Hepatitis A and B vaccine
- Combine Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccine
Consult your travel health clinic so that you are well advised regarding which specific type of the shot to go for, depending on your actual destination and itinerary.
Tetanus Vaccine
Tetanus is present in soils everywhere, and it is contracted through wounds and cuts. The vaccine features a full five-dose offered as part of childhood vaccines for lifelong immunity. However, if you suspect you never had the full dose, you should confirm with your doctor and know if it will be necessary to get another one before you travel to Indochina.
Typhoid Vaccine
Typhoid is also present throughout the whole world, but more pronounced in areas with hygiene and sanitation problems. If you are an adventurous eater or you plan on interacting a lot with the locals during your visit to Indochina, then this will be a highly recommended vaccine. You should take the vaccine one month before your travel date, and booster shots are also recommended once in every three years if you continue to stay in high-risk areas.
