How to Avoid Getting Sick While on a Cruise Ship

If you want to visit multiple destinations in one swoop, then there is no better way than to board a cruise ship. With it, come exciting experiences, such as going for exotic shore excursions, relaxing by the pool in the middle of the sea, and treating yourself to some delicious cuisine. However, your trip on a cruise ship can turn into a real nightmare, should you happen to get sick, and this is why it is imperative to avoid getting sick as much as you possibly can when on such an expedition. Here is how you can stay safe:

Get immunized

Before boarding the cruise ship, be sure to call in at your travel clinic, and discuss your itinerary with your travel doctor or medical professional, so that you get the right advice, and most importantly, you get the right travel vaccines. The specific jabs given will be contingent upon your travel destinations, and the type of activities you will be involved in.

Arrive at the port of departure a few days in advance

Fatigue can compromise your immune system, and predispose you to a myriad of attacks. If you have to travel to a different time zone to board the cruise ship, be sure to arrive at the port a day or two prior to the departure date. This is so that you acclimatize yourself to the change, and also to overcome the jetlag.

Pace yourself at the buffet

While on the cruise ship, you will be treated to multiple course meals, jam-packed with lots of alcohol and rich foods. There will be a strong temptation to overindulge, but just remember that there will be consequences for doing so, and your weakness will be your digestive system. Choose what you eat and drink wisely, while on board, to avoid bloating, and feeling nauseous when going for onshore excursions. A poor diet, combined with minimal sleep, can result in a lowered immune system, and more susceptibility to nearby viruses.
